Rob: 5/16" is good only if you have trouble gripping 1/4". 5/16" will excessively weigh the clew down in light wind conditions. I used 1/4" for the headsails on M17 & M15 and on the Sage 17 and Sage 15. Strength is not the issue (you could use 3/16" though this is hard on thebhads except in the light winds). 1/4" is so strong you can lift the boat. Get good low stretch double braid line. I need to add a missing jib sheet. The existing one looks to be 7/16" diameter. Casey (This Old Boat) recommends polyester double braid for sheets ("Period."). A sail-rite document ( https://www.sailrite.com/PDF/Rope%20Selection%20Recommendations.pdf) has a table of recommended diameters, and it looks like 5/16" would work for my M17.
Does that sound reasonable?
