The one on Osprey II seems to be a purpose built one. It's 3/8" line, on wire pennants, with clip shackles on either end. The cleat is the dreaded v notch one. It works great! TH

My M-17, which belonged to a saailor named Tom Van Atta and was campaigned by tom and Jerry, I believe, came with a boom vang which attaches to the toe rail, and allows really good sail control and shaping. I highly recommend one.
