Chads idea of the checkbook is the easiest unless...... I used to be the guy that people 'wrote the check' to. Stripped bottoms for a couple of decades. If you can find someone who will plastic media blast or soda blast the boat while you watch to make sure they don't get overly aggressive would be a good idea. Ask them to show you some examples of their work. If I were to apply anti-fouling to the bottom of my 17 I would de-wax, sand, apply Interlux 2000/2001 barrier coat to proper thickness, sand the bottom (barrier coat) smooth and apply VC-17 -best description I found is at this link - _http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2325_ (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2325) This is THE easiest to apply, and maintain antifouling you can use. We rolled primarily, and sprayed keel trunks etc. (Prevail sprayer for small areas) 2-3 coats can be applied in 2 hours max (it gets hot here and dry) Very easy to repaint and you don't get much 'build-up' as the years go on. Read the application instructions, It is easy. Cons- Limited color palette Not the strongest anti-fouling but it is easy and inexpensive to redo - really easy! I know - it sounds like I am selling the stuff but NFIW just an excellent product for trailerable boat bottoms - we also used it on wet boats and everyone was happy - small check to the boat guy to maintain - As a bonus it is also very attractive paint if you can call any anti-fouling paint good lookin' = check out the copper color on a dark hull! Sean Mulligan may chime in here as I believe he runs with VC-17(?) Once it is applied properly - piece of cake forward. Sorry for the rant - but I hate to see people get stuck with thick chunky gobs of poison paint on the bottom of a Wrinkle Boat. If you have any questions feel free to ask. It really is a messy job. I looked at some of the chemical peel methods and watched the progress of a guy trying to use this method on his boat and decided that it wasn't really any easier then sanding since he had to do quite a bit of that anyway. On the montgomery boats with the lapstrake I imagine makes removal even more difficult. There are places that will soda blast, (like sandblasting only using baking soda) which seems to work well, the soda is a lot easier on the fiberglass then sandblasting would be. This to me seems like an easier method then sanding and is probably the route I will take when it comes time to do the bottom of my monty followed by an epoxy barrier coat. --Chad On Apr 29, 2009, at 10:40 AM, Arnold Sharpe wrote:
Ditto to this question! I want to take the ablative bottom paint off "Little Breeze" and replace it with hard ...what is the easiest method? Arnold On Apr 29, 2009, at 5:48 AM, JDavies104@aol.com wrote:
John,
I also have ablative bottom paint on my boat put on by the previous owner who kept her in salt water. How are you removing the paint on your boat? I'd be interested in your experience, since removing the bottom paint is on my to-do list (though not at the top of the list). My boat is now dry-sailed, so I don't need the anti-fouling protection.
Good luck,
