Jeff, The M23 I just purchased came with an old Evinrude 9.9 2 stroke. I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet. I have a 5hp Nissan on my M17 and judging from the performance of the 5 horse and the weight difference I would think that the 6 horse would be too small except for calm waters or marina maneuvering only. Why not consider one of the new more efficient 2 strokes? They meet California emissions requirements and they are lighter than the 4 strokes. Let us know what you finally decide. I would be interested in hearing what HP motors others are using and how happy they are with it. I am considering a 6HP and a 9.9HP 4 stroke long shaft. The 6 would be nicer as it is much lighter and I could bring it home instead of leaving it on the boat to be stolen again. The 9.9 would have more power, but it would be difficult to move each sailing session due to the weight. Any suggestions? Thanks.
