Mine doesn't go backwards either but with the angled handel & a thin wedge it will go around & around. I think Dave means a number 6 winch (#6 winch), not a 6 inch winch? cheers, John S. On 05/08/2018 06:14 PM, Gary Froeschner wrote:
Thanks for the responses. My winch does not need repair. It never had the ability to ratchet. I took it apart. That’s the way it was built. It actually works smoothly. Just can’t ratchet the handle backwards. There are no markings on it anywhere. I don’t think it was the original.
I will find a Harken B6A or something comparable. Thanks again.

Gary.
You need a 6" winch. Yeah, it does need to be watching, so I'm wondering if your boat's has a broken or jammed pawls?
See here details on taking one apart to service -

A lot if the M17s have ACOR 6's. No longer available. A Harken B6A will work fine if your winch is actually beyond repair. Defender.com is a good source.

This is Gary Froeschner. I have a 1976 Montgomery 17, haul # 95 (I think). I believe, after 5 years of decorating my driveway, I might actually get in the water this season.
I am in need of a centerboard winch. There is one on my boat, but I don’t think it is the original. It is single speed, one way, non-ratcheting winch. (if I’ve got the nomenclature right). The handle hits the centerboard trunk & you can’t back it up (ratchet) to take another bite. Assuming that this is not how it was designed, do you have the proper winch? If so, how much?
