Clarence, I second that. I don't keep anything of real value in the cockpit lockers. Some small tools, hardware items, gas, lunch hook (4# claw) with chain and rode, hat, suntan lotion, small stuff, etc. Keys are safe in the cabin. While sailing, the good stuff is on the cockpit floor: binocs, GPS, VHF, fish finder. But they stay in the cabin at night, except for the cheap binoc do stay in the cockpit locker. Rusty, When I took delivery of M-17 #604, there were no hatch latches nor weather strip to seal them. I installed locking cam latches on all three lockers (West Marine Model # 2735090, TACO P/N F61-2425CH-1), and installed adhesive backed weather stripping to the lids of the hatches and the cabin hatch. The latches will accept a lock, but I'd rather a thief steal the contents than destroy the hatches with a crow-bar. Rusty,
Even with the shallow lockers, that keep water out of the inside of the boat, do you want to loose your eyeglasses, camera, Rolex watch, wife or girlfriend's diamond ring, car keys, and wallet because you didn't have a latch on the lids?
Keep things closed that are meant to be closed, and don't let them fling all their contents into the ocean when you have your hands full with a cockpit full of water; a main sheet that is jammed; and you are heading for a lee shore................
If your sail lockers are locked, that is one less problem to worry about................. and their contents will still be all there when the panic has subsided. .........scrambled maybe, but still there.
