Something of a mystery: After my last sail, I discovered about a quart of water sloshing around my battery in the V berth storage area and another cup or so in the port side (inside) storage locker. It's fresh water, though my last sail on the boat was in salt. Before that, however, I sailed in fresh water with high winds and waves, sometimes rail down, with lots of spray and airborne water... I also wash the boat down thoroughly on the driveway with fresh water from a hose after each sail. Yet I never noticed any water on or under the cushions in the V berth, nor any water inside the cabin at all during any sailing I've done on her nor after washing her down (except a little around the hatch boards). This boat is always garaged and has not been rained on since I've owned her. The hull appears pristine to my naked eye. No cracks, crazing, blisters or anything else to suggest any kind of hull breach. So...how did the water get there? First guess: the boat is 18 years old and has almost certainly not had her fittings re-bedded. Bow pulpit, cleats and fairleads all penetrate the deck and are potential sources of leaks if the bedding has failed. Likewise the silicone sealant around the side windows. Second guess: the hull-deck joint. In heavy weather could the boat have twisted or flexed, causing a failure in the seal between hull and deck? But If either of these is the case, I should have seen or felt water in the cabin and it seems odd that I did not. Third guess: Centerboard. Could water get in from underneath via the centerboard or pin? (On my boat the centerboard hinge pin openings on either side of the keel appear to have been crudely caulked.) Should I maybe seal them up with epoxy? I'm fresh out of guesses, but I sure would like to not have water collecting in the boat and would welcome any ideas about possible causes and fixes.
