If I didn't already have a handheld GPS, that would be on the top of my wish list. The garmin GPSMAP series are very popular, waterproof, and float.
A handheld VHF radio is another, look at Icom and Standard Horizon for handheld floating models.
Safety-wise, a throw-able life ring or horseshoe on a line attached to the boat is another idea. I have a lifesling, and, although it is rather, large to be in the cockpit of an M15, it still offers additional piece of mind in the event of a dreaded MOB situation. Life vests are a must, but the throwable on a line can help get a person overboard closer to the boat faster and out of the water faster. (Credit to GO for making me aware of this)
Also sailing gloves???
