After pushing the slugs up into the groove you could buy a stopper from West Marine when you go for the block -- check what size you're going to need. Or you could drill a hole so that you can put a pin across the mast, through the track, so that the pin blocks the slugs from falling. (And I'm sure you can guess how quickly the pin or stopper will leap overboard if not tied onto a piece of line).
