As a kid, I spent summers at my Aunt's on Lake Charlevoix and learned to sail on a Sailfish (anybody remember those?) That was big water for a 'Fish when you're 12! Lunch lashed to mast and off for the day. I left Michigan before I graduated to "big" boats and got to experience the Lakes by sail, but I well remember riding with my Dad in the car and racing for the ferry in St Ignace. No bridge then! To all of you who have no idea what we're talking about, apologies for clogging you email and... Music please: DON'T GO UP THERE STAY WHERE YOU'RE AT DON'T GO UP THERE YOU WON'T COME BACK... Shhhh! The Great Lakes are probably the best kept open secret in the world.
To me, it looks as if the M-boats were built for Michigan; I wonder if Lyle Hess ever had the opportunity to sail here? The big blue looks kinda' scary from the Midwest, at times... California to Hawaii in an M-15???? That's a bit more adventuresome than I am, but don't anyone tempt me.
By the way, a good friend of mine has the copyright for the "Say ya to the UP, eh" slogan from about 1980 (a variation on the "Say yes! To Michigan" ad campaign) . He hasn't worked on anything but his hobbies in 20 years! All it takes is a good (??) idea!
Take care,
