Someone could have trimmed 2' off the sail at the head, then trimmed the leech to a fair curve, and then rebuilt the head patches and the leech tapes. The draft position would be in the wrong place in the top section of the sail (too far aft), however, if that were done. The previous owner obviously wasn't concerned with optimizing his M15's sailing ability, so I'm assuming anything goes. If he cared about sailing performance, he'd have put in a reef, instead of getting a too-small sail., As you wrote, George, it's possible, (although not optimal, IMO) to cut a sail to make it smaller... but it's generally a bad idea to try to make it bigger ;) I've heard of taking old sails and making then smaller to make trainer-sized sails for use in local community-based non-profit sailing programs, for donated boats. (I've done that myself in years long past.) But I've never heard of anybody make sails bigger! On my sail the foot is at the proper length and it appears that the luff is short so the leech will be at the incorrect angle. I will keep the group posted on my findings after I haul the boat. Surely a sail maker could easily sew 2 ft onto your short sail. I had the same experience when I bought a Compac 16 from a fellow who sailed exclusively on Chesapeake Bay. I suppose he wanted a sail with a permanent "reef". RTH.
