I once took a 38 kt gust (measured on an anemometer on a nearby boat) sailing on a beam reach with full main and 135 genoa flying, broached, and ended up taking a gallon or two of green water into the cockpit, but she rounded up nicely into the wind. I'm not sure that counts as a knockdown, but it's as close as I've come. Couldn't have been better-behaved. Thanks, Jerry! Has anybody experienced a knock down in a 17? If so, how did it perform? Were the companionway boards in or out? Tom B

Thanks for sharing. It's good to hear reports of how our boats behave in unusual circumstances. Especially when all turns out well for the captain and crew.

Our Montgomery 15 is a good boat. We were sailing on Union Valley Reservoir in the Crystal basin near Kyburz off of Highway 50. We were stopped and then suddenly hit by a strong gust at an exact 90 degrees. It threw me to the down side and our boat capsized. Within seconds it righted itself. There was no water in the cabin or on the mainsail. We were fine.
