Another option for a battery is one of those "jump start" type batteries. They come in a variety of sizes and often with a built-in charger, 12vdc outlet, and a carrying handle. I started with a small one on our M17 and it worked fine powering the depth sounder for several days. I later switched to a larger model to give me extra work-on-the-boat laptop time. In both cases I removed the jumper cables and connect the dept sounder and other equipment directly using the built in 12vdc outlet.
