Jerry, I appear to be in the minority, but haven't felt uncomfortably stuffy in my 15, especially since I started using a light nylon boom tent. I'd go for opening ports/dorade vent and skip the hatch. It maintains the watertight integrity and strength of the hull as well as providing a more workable foredeck. I'd vote for a little more ballast, proportionately, than the 15 has now. I think about tall he times watching Tod sitting comfortably to leeward in his 17 when I was having to play the mainsheet.
