I guess the electric motor has great limitations when it comes to how long it will run. I usually sail the entire way, only using my 2 hp outboard when I'm leaving San Pedro, and when I get to Avalon or the Isthmus. I have used the outboard on occasion to motorsail, to save time. I can see now that an electric outboard is not an option for me. On Thu, May 9, 2019, 7:40 PM Mark Dvorscak <mdvorscak56@gmail.com> wrote:
I don't have any personal experience with the Torqueedo, but based on what others have said I wouldn't want to rush it. In my opinion, I believe the safety factor should outweigh all others for ocean sailing. No way would I risk sailing to Catalina with only an electric auxiliary unless I was fully prepared to spend at least one night out on the open ocean. I think you could only count on a couple hours of motor use on each end of that trip. I'd plan on sailing the entire way and reserve the motor only for Marina maneuvering and emergencies. That being said, if I had a few extra batteries and a way to charge them at Catalina, I might consider it. Mark Dvorscak M23 & M15

I have a 1003S on my M15 since Aug. 2018. I chose it over the 503 to have the extra run time via its beefier 520 Wh battery. I have the standard fixed mount on the port side of the transom but added wedges to to its surfaces to make the motor shaft vertical and allow the tiller/throttle to better clear the transom when the motor is pivoted up for sailing. The 1003L would probably give you more mounting options (as in higher) and better clearances. Either way, the Torqueedo is a very fine piece of technology and I really like not messing about with liquid fuel.
