Hi Sandra, We refinished our M17 rudder last year. The previous owner had anti-fouling paint on the bottom half as it was kept on a mooring. We stripped the complete blade and sanded it. Brushed on thinned expoxy resin over the complete blade, twice. On the bottom 4 inches we then applied fiberglass cloth and built that up with a couple more coats of resin, regular viscosity. Over the fiberglass we applied a single part urethane paint. The thinking there is that we can see if the bottom has been beat up at all, and needs any recoating. Epoxy resin is not UV stable, so we varnished the complete blade with spar varnish to protect.(4 coats) Varnish is not too water resistant, but we keep the boat in a dry sail compound, so it is hauled after most day sails. 1-2 weeks immersed on a long trip will be okay. (coming up soon!!). Good luck with the refinish job. Hope this helps a bit. Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 #622 On Sun, Jul 31, 2011 at 7:18 PM, Sandra Anton <sailrsandy@yahoo.com> wrote:
the rudder has lost its varnish on the bottom edge from hitting the soft sandy bottom of Barnegat Bay one too many times. How can I tough it up or refinish the whole piece of wood. What Products do I use to strip or sand or add new coats? _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats
