Joe...let it go a couple of more years. That synthetic rope doesn't rot much; and it only has to lift about 22 pounds. The older boats with the 165 pound cast iron boards probably need more scrutiny. Any centerboard that takes a WINCH to move up and down will have much more stress (on the rope and the Captain). It's not a fun thing to crank up a heavy board with a winch everytime you go sailing. Thanks Bob, I keep Seafrog in a slip for about 9-10 months a year. The slip is in a creek off the ICW with a tital current. Does that affect your estimate?? Joe...you're good. Perhaps every 5 or 6 years depending on usage..etc. in the water or dry storage..etc. Bob

How often should one replace the pendant?? My M17 is two years old. Is this something I should put on my todo list?? Thanks Joe M17 Seafrog ----- Original Message ----- From: Arnold Sharpe To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Sent: Friday, October 22, 2010 1:17 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Centerboard pennant question
Bill, I changed the pendant in my M-17 (hull 265) a couple of years back and will do it again this next season. It requires raising the hull enuf to lower the board all the way to expose the connection. You must remove the stop pin thru the fixed keel to allow the board to lower all the way. In my M-17 the centerboard connection is with a SS clevis with 5/16" braid connected with an eye splice. Make sure that the clevis is narrow enuf to not wedge in the trunk. Having just owned M17 #622 (2003) for a little over a year, I am not sure what shape the centerboard pennant line is in. So far so good, but I want to do some preventative maintenance on it and try to be prepared with the correct materials.
I can sling it up off the trailer to check it at a friends shop with his large forklift.
There is a chandlery not to far that I can go to when I do the deed.
I am asking what I am going to see when I do this.
1. Does the C/B drop far enough to expose the line? 2. Will I have to remove the pin I have seen discussed on this forum to get access to the line? 3. How is the line fastened to the board? Is the rope line spliced to a wire? Looped through an eye in the board or with a knot in a recess?
Thanks for any advice.
