Bill, I use a 2 HP Honda 4 stroke on my 1980 M17 (with the cutout in the transom) and find it more than adequate. I have heard some people say that if you are in open water bucking waves and currents that it may not be enough. Dan M17 #316B Bill Sylvester wrote:

I sold the ComPac 16 years ago. That had the 2 HP Suzuki which was a great engine / boat combination.
At half to 3/4 throttle the Suzuki pushed the ComPac 16 at hull speed - depending on load.
I found the 2 HP Suzuki (or probably any 2 HP outboard) more than enough power for the ComPac.
