Hi Bones, I have not read any of John's books. Thanks for the recommendation. I believe that you are right about the rigging. I have been thinking that it would be difficult to damage one corner of the deck under the tabernacle if the mast had suffered blunt force trauma of some sort. It seems that it just crushed one corner and transferred that load down the compression post. I assume under the sole I will find that the bottom of the post is somehow compressed since this is conservation of wood, it had to go somewhere if everything above moved down. This might tie into the spreader that was lose although I may be associating too much. I would love to see what was done on your boat! It would be very helpful when I rebuild and repair the area. You can mail them off list when you have a chance. No hurry as I do not plan on doing the repair until after the season. cannot fathom that this represents a potential failure with the rest of the tabernacle solid. I did use a rigging tool to get the shrouds in tune when I put up the mast. I am just thrilled with how well the boat sails! My oldest son was in town for the maiden voyage and he was very impressed. He said it reminded him of the Tartan 28 he raced on in Lake Superior. Thanks for your help! Robbin On 6/9/2011 8:56 AM, bownez@juno.com wrote:
Hi Robbin, Follow this link:http://www.48north.com/mr_offline/denaming.htm Have you read any of John's books? He is very entertaining and knowledgable. I have a few thoughts about your tabernacle and cracked sole.It may be possible that the rigging on your M23 may have been overtightened or stressed at some point. I think it happened to my M23 as well. The former owner Dick Lane noticed this and rebuilt the top deck and added support. On my boat, the deck under the tabernacle has been replaced in a small section, the tabernacle moved aft a few inches, and a thick metal plate has been added inside the boat at the top of the compression post.Perhaps in the original build the deck was a bit too thin for the mast loading. I can take some pictures if you wish..... Happy sailing! Bones ____________________________________________________________ Groupon™ Official Site 1 ridiculously huge coupon a day.
