Sounds like the Ida Sailor rudder. Several of us in the northwest are using them with good results. I don't know that it performs "better" than the original, but it's as good anyway, plus the kickup capability will protect your transom in case of a grounding. The plastic blade is a bit heavy, but it has neutral buoyancy when in the water which makes it fairly easy to raise and lower. The Ida Sailor rudder is actually an option on the new Monty's now. Then i found a company that has a plastic replacement that also kicks up. I don't recall the manufacturers name but noticed that it actually weighs more than the mahogony.
