Edward: Thank you for the response. The trailer extension I cobbled up consists of a 2’ sleeve U-bolted to the top of the frame near the built-in jack. (I have the original Trail-rite trailer that has a jack coming through the middle of the channel that forms the trailer tongue.) A 7’ extension slides in the bolt-on sleeve. It rides above the original tongue. I would never use the bolted extension for traveling, just for launching and retrieving the boat at the ramp. What I would like to do is cut off the existing coupler and replace it with my extension, allowing it to telescope. It will fit but won’t slide back because the built in jack goes through the tube. I can cut this off (I have added a regular wheeled jack) but it goes right through the center and I don’t have the welding skills to patch and reinforce the big hole removing the jack would leave. Finding a welder to help me with this is on my list of projects for this summer. Re the Odyssey: I have had Chrysler vans since 1986 and never had a problem towing. I towed my 3660 lb VN23 to Lake Havasu (from Minneapolis) and my M17 to Phoenix with my 2012 Town & Country without the slightest problem. I switched to a 2019 Odyssey last year. I am concerned because I found out after I bought the van that the 9 speed transmissions in the latest generation (2018-2020) are problematic. The towing capacity and maximum tongue weight are considerably less than the Chryslers’. I would not consider towing the VN23 with the Odyssey but the M17 falls well within its capacity (once I get the tongue weight sorted out.). I am planning on towing her out to Puget Sound for the Salish 100 and Pocket Yacht Palooza in July. John: I haven’t had Monita weighed at a weigh station yet but that is on my list of things to do before launch this spring. I am fairly confident that her weight is similar to yours but actually getting her weighed will give me some peace of mind. The advertised displacement of my VN23 Chiquita was 2000lb but actual weight with trailer, motor, and minimal gear was 3660lb. I may have to rethink the outboard mount at the forward end of the trailer and possibly move the spare tire mount farther aft to get the tongue weight right.
