The rudder on my '76 M17 is 12" wide and 6'-0" long, it's original equipment and made from Mahogany. Has 3 pintles and 3 gudgeons which slide on a 3/8" steel rod approx 33" long. I'm in the process of building a second rudder the same dimensions but as a kick up, (each half being 3'-0"). I'm making it from 2" x 12" Pine and fiberglassing the outside. I use a long piece of shock cord to hold it in the down posiition, and a rope to hold it up when I want to retract it. Two Pintles from (one from a flea market for a dollar, and one from west marine for 30 dollars), 3/16" aluminum plates for the sides, six 1/4" s.s. bolts, and a lot of cutting and fitting. Hope this helps. Can someone tell me the length of the standard M17 rudder? I'm trying to determine if my rudder was modified to accommodate sailing on the Chesapeake.
thanks

You could order a rudder from Bob, and I seem to recall someone down in Louisiana had found a guy who could make one out of plywood.
I made a new one myself for the self steering windvane, and it's not that hard to do, but you do need the original to copy as a pattern.

Hi All:
My name is Leif Eriksson and my boat partner's name is Henry Sapp. Together, we are owned by an almost derelict M17. When we acquired it a few weeks ago it had no sails, no cushions, no battery, no radio, no rudder, no masthead light, no wiring of any kind, no safety gear and no boom. Over the past few weeks we've managed to acquire a set of sails which need to be cut down to fit, cushions, battery, boom, retractable motor mount, anchor and life jackets. So we are making progress and are determined to sail this summer. Our most immediate need is for either a damaged rudder or a diagram from which to build a new rudder. We have a kick up blade, so with that we are half way there. We will be sailing on the lower Neuse River below New Bern, NC which has a lot of good water but a lot of thin spots also. We'll keep the group posted on our progress and welcome any comments, advice, warning or whatever information anyone would care to send.
We look forward to being active owners and expect to enjoy being part of this group.
Have the best of summers.
