According to my estimate, the carburetor bowl on the Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke holds about 20 ml (about 0.005 US gallon). So if at 4 knots the engine runs until it sputters for 2 minutes, the fuel economy will be approximately 4NM x 2/60 x 1/0.005 = ~27 NM/gallon. Obviously this is a rough approximation, since the 20 ml is only approximate and one doesn't know if all of it was burned. I think Larry Yake figured his fuel economy was around the above figure at a speed of 4.2 knots with his 6 hp Suzuki 4-stroke. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails. Larry,
Your M17 (sister ship to mine) is 30 years old but you would never know it, I've seen her and what a beauty. I wish mine was as pristine as yours. I finally did rebuild the foredeck on mine, removing all the saturated balsa core and layering in new fiberglass, and core-mat with epoxy. A painstaking, messy job, but now finished and out of the way. My M17 is ready for the next big traveling adventure! As far as gas mileage goes, I have never calculated it with my Yamaha 4Hp 4 stroke. I'll refer all to Gary Hyde's figures.
As far as boat values goes, a boat is worth what the buyer will pay for it. The seller and buyer strike a deal. Story ends.
