Hi ..
I am in the process of buying an old M-17. It is motorless. Will a Honda 4-stroke 2hp do for me?<<
I see most have encouraged you towards 4-6 hp motors...so will I. Even if you mostly sail on an inland lake, as I do, the more powerful motor will be more useful, especially if you trailer sail to the Gulf, or areas with a tide or currents. Be sure to get a long shaft, and F-N-R shifting. Also be aware of the size of the prop. I use one of two Seagulls..a 3hp and a 5 hp. The prop on the 3 hp will not bite the rudder, but the 5 hp will. Mention was also made concerning the motor's handle. Both of the Seagulls handles are on the port side of the boat...it has the cutout, as Stargazer is a 1979 model. Essentially, I steer with the rudder, leaving the motor centered. It's possible to do some steering with the motor, but it's only marginally effective when you want to turn to the right.
