One nice thing about having the sliding gooseneck is you can slide it above the slot when you want it out of the wayfor overnights or such. In particular I raise it higher for a boom tent/canopy/tarp thing for more headroom. Which luckily is about the proper boom height, as the main is just an inch or two from topping out when fully hoisted. I need to put in a proper downhaul/cunningham, but meanwhile I do have a line from eye on bottom of gooseneck to a downhaul cleat below on mast, which prevents the gooseneck from sliding up. So it's 'fixed' between those two lines one way or another any time the main is up. cheers, John On 10/7/22 10:40, Mike Epp wrote:
I'm curious about the "fixing" too. But I simply raised the main and tied it down and up to cleats. Never had an issue afterwards.

Jon,
What do you use for a fixed gooseneck? I'm tired of the sliding gooseneck on my M15... in heavy winds it sometimes pops clear out of the track, sometimes pushes the sail stop out of position and falls on my head, and takes a lot of extra time to secure in place w/ a downhaul when rigging from the trailer. Sometimes I also manage to set it too low or too high and it's hard to adjust out on the water.

Jon, that is what I did on my past M-17, and is in store for my M-15. I use the same 3:1 purchase with open hook to effect Cunningham and reef as you state. Have fUn, go sailing. GO M-15 #330 ‘Cahoots’

I changed the sliding gooseneck mount to a fixed mount. I did it primarily because the boomkicker works better if the boom is fixed. When I reef lower sail and just eye ball the reef cringle above the boom. Then I make up the jiffy reefing. I have a dinghy mainsheet attached at the mast base with a hook on the other end. I hook the reef cringle and tension in until the sail looks right.
