ended up using the topping lift to tension the mast forward
I attached the jib halyard to the stem fitting every time I raised the mast. The mast only has to be lifted half-way or so, and then it's easy to tighten up the halyard with one hand and attach the forestay at your leisure. Makes it almost too easy (can _anything_ on a sailboat be that easy?). Giles Morris
