I like your color coded lines for port and starboard. I agree that the base plate will bend if the mast gets out of control, happened on my M-15 and I had to tow (outhaul onto the trailer) the boat into a repair shop to get it fixed. Here's a few pix of the tabernacle on my '74 M17 "Pajarita," #38. Is the original as far as I can tell. 3/8" SS bolt thru slot in tabernacle and thru hole in mast. Weight-bearing of mast base is on base plate of tabernacle, bolt and tabernacle side plates just keep the base in the right place. A hinged base plate (or even the beefier tabernacle such as on mine) won't keep your mast aligned while raising, if it gets out of control. It will just bend, break, tear off the mounts, or some of all three, depending on what it's made of and how it is attached. cheers, John On 5/3/19 1:31 PM, Bob Eeg wrote:
Gerry Use your old mast tabernacle. You don’t want that mast going sideways and pulling bolts thru the deck. The DM 6 mast is too heavy for a hinged Mast plate. The dwyer guys don’t know any better. 😀 New owner. Plus I use a 3/8 Bolt for the pivot. With a Nut. Not a pin like the M 15. Bob Eeg

Yes. On the original set up, does the bottom of the mast step ultimately sit on the tabernacle bracket, just rocking fore and aft a bit while pivoting on the one horizontal through bolt as one introduces rake? Mark Dvorscak

I have the original tabernacle and was originally planning on using it. I was surprised that Dwyer set the new mast up with this hinged base because I didn't ask for it although I see it would be nice for the stability of raising the mast. I am guessing the new mast is a bit shorter due to this thicker hinged step, so I might have to shim the tabernacle up off the deck to go that route. I'll do some measuring and see how the height is. On the original set up, does the bottom of the mast step ultimately sit on the tabernacle bracket, just rocking fore and aft a bit while pivoting on the one horizontal through bolt as one introduces rake? Garry. I'd ask Dwyer is you can return your mast base and get the correct tabernacle for a M17. Follow what Mark wrote - rake is different than bend.

That sounds like I then also have to shim my new assembly to introduce some rake. The new Dwyer mast came with a hinged step rather than a tabernackle with one pivot bolt. Here is a link to a diagram of the step. It doesn't appear to allow for pivoting once you lift the mast and have the two pins in the base. https://www.dwyermast.com/images/dh2110h_linedrawing.jpg

To answer the part of your question not already addressed, you do not flex the mast to achieve the rake. Loosen the fore stay and tighten the back stay until the desired rake is set.Mark Dvorscak On Fri, May 3, 2019, 10:35 Gerry Lempicki via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:
Now that the bottom paint project is near an end, I am hoping to start fitting my new mast next week. What is the consensus regarding rake on the 17? I see on Jerry's site that the M15 likes a little rake aft. Same on the M17 or no? And if so, how much is a little? Does one actually flex the mast doing this? The reason I ask is that the new mast from Dwyer came with a new hinged step rather than a tabernackle, so there is no pivoting on a tabernackle bolt once it's mounted with this hinged step and pinned in place.
