Entering Mexico or Canada may not be a problem, but getting back into the U.S. will be a problem without a passport. One may only sail upon the waters without touching foreign soil, but I would not want to have to convince any U.S. authority in the vicinity of a border that I sailed without my passport and did not go ashore. Not in today's atmosphere of border security. I re-read my post. And....I made it sound as if we did the long route, which we did not. We did the "medium" length course which was a direct line between Long Beach and San Diego one time.....and Newport Beach and San Diego the other... eliminating the Mexican waters portion. I think it is correct now that if you land on Mexican soil you need your passport....however if you transition Mexican waters, having never touched land, and then 're-enter US waters and then disembark on land.....you do not need the passport. And yes, as stated by Steven, you need them to enter Canada as well.
