Hi Frank As the new owners of M!% Leppo We're towing her with "Harriet" a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT w/5 speed. Our limited (about 600 miles, 4launch/recoverys so far) experiance has been fine. The manual says it will tow a 1000 lbs trailer but without mention of the trailers frontal area. I Don't know your Corrolas specs but Harriet has a 2 liter 4 cyl. It puts out a claimed 140 HP,&130 LB/FT of torque. I say claimed because usefull power is lower. To get the "big" numbers the engine tuning is biased towards high RPMs. Which means in real life keeping speed up or downshifting on hills (here in VT that happens even without the boat), and getting revs up before uphill starts on ramps. The only real issue so far has been that our milage goes from the 32-36 mpg to 24-25 when towing. Harriet has 4 wheel discs and ABS, stopping has not been an issue, but on the steepest ramp we've used the parking brake is hard pressed to hold her. At that ramp we put a chock (on a rope) behind a rear wheel before the pulling the boat onto the trailer. Then, when we're all set, rather then do a parking brake start or slip the clutch I pretty much just dump it in gear and let martha pull the chock away before the trailer gets there. since we're only talking 0-walking speed in 3 feet it seems safe enough Intereastingly our '99 Jeep Wrangler's manual says that with an automatic it's also rated to tow only 1000 lbs but with the manual is rated for a full ton.
