Norm, That's a nice kayak! I have towed a 15 ft Bolger light dory (85 lbs) on several week long cruises with mixed results. In 7 - 15 kts of wind you hardly know it is there and may only knock 1/4 to 1/2 kt off the speed. As the waves build to windward you suffer a little more but not no bad as the rigid narrow hull slices through pretty well. It has been a pleasure to have it along. The bad news - One trip with winds pushing 20 kts and strong cross current the waves became irregular pyramids and the dory was rolling so badly that I returned to the anchorage. A second trip with the winds in excess of 20 kts while sailing downwind the dory was on a long tether and came close to broaching as is came down the face of the 3 - 4 ft waves at an angle. I shortened the tether to keep it in line and it started smashing into the stern as it tried to pass me. I have since bought an inflatable Kayak recommended by an Mlist participant from the Catalina Island trips. It is a 1 man kayak from Sterns and really works very well. They have been on sale at West Marine lately for an attractive price. There is a two man one available as well. It pumps up easily with a foot pump, weights 35 lbs and fits in the bow area of the M15 quite well. Thanks Doug Kelch "Seas the Day" --- Norm Bundek <nbundek@earthlink.net> wrote:
I'm wondering how much the sailing characteristics of an M15 would be degraded by pulling a 12' 6" kayak. I have a Hobie Outback which is just 2' 6" shorter than the Monty. Has anyone experienced pulling anything this large? The Outback weighs 64 lbs.
The good part about this kayak is that with it's Mirage drive system (peddle power) it can tow the Monty. I was going to sell it for something smaller but thought I would get some opinions on it first. This is what the kayak looks like: http://www.yourcommunityweb.com/kayak.htm .
