We met him when we joined in on the '07 Yake San Juan Adventure and again in '09 when we took the 200 mile jaunt with the group. We found quickly that as soon as you engaged David one on one, there was a kind soul there. We only spent a few weeks total in David's company but quickly figured out the "gruff" response to an intial contact almost was a little game to see if you would dive in a little deeper to see who the real man was. 'Jo hit it off with David after a commical introduction. She was proudly wearing her lightweight beach jacket that she got in Cozumel. The trip we made to Cozumel was a dive trip. I have been a diver most of my adult life, but this was a first for Jo. It was a real accomplishment for her to overcome the fear of the unkown and become a certified Scuba Diver. She rewarded herself with a prized jacket that had bright tropical fish on it and the word "SCUBA" down the sleeve. It was a badge of honor, as we had been to Cozumel before and she was not a diver and alhtough she loved the jacket she would not by it becasue "she wasn't really a diver". After gaining her certification, and making the reservations for the Dive trip I remember her saying, "When we get there I am getting the "REAL" Scuba jacket now that I am a real Scuba diver. (she had gotten a similar jacket on the previous trip we made but just got one that said "cozumel" cause she wasn't a diver then) So, we made the trip to Cozumel, she got the Diver jacket, and now here we are months later and we are meeting David walking down the dock in Blakely Island Marina. As we approached David he was walking towards us. Larry had told us about David. We wanted to get off on the right foot. Jo and I said HI! as we were about 15 feet away still walking towards him. He was walking towards us. He looked at Jo, never broke stride and said "Huh...You a diver?" (still walking) I could see Jo light up with pride "why yes I am" she said proud that someone noticed her acheivement. She was literally glowing with pride. David (still walking and walking right past us now " Yeah, I figured".... "You got it written all over your jacket", and he just kept on walking right on by. LOL HAHAHA Poor 'Jo kind of deflated for a second,,,,then we both busted up laughing! Later on that day 'Jo and David bumped into each other again. This time, she pushed right through the outer shell and encoutered the real David. She came back to the boat and told me how much she enjoyed talking to him. Numerous other times through the week they spent time talking. We never stopped laughing about that initial encouter. Here's a link to a video...in it you will see David on that very day. This was sailing from Anacortes to Blakely Island for our first day of our trip. David and his beloved "Buttercup" M15 are at the 3:30 mark in the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-jUWCj4BK4 Fair winds David. We are better for having met you.
