I've put it on my list of spring projects. Thanks much for your advice, Jerry and Tom! Gordon On 3/6/08 3:21 PM, "jerry" <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org> wrote:
The trick it to drill and bolt the first two bolts, then have someone bend the track ahead of you as you drill and bolt. Install and tighten each bolt as you go. When you get them all in, unbolt, dust everything off, put a bead of bedding (polyurethane)in the top of the rail and then re-bolt. Use 10-32 #10 round head machine screws.

Yes, that is how the genoa track is added. It's a fairly long bit of 1 inch track--I'll measure mine today once I clear the snow to the shop (I'll bet it's a 5 or 6 foot segment that goes from mid-window aft to near the end of the toe rail). If you're handy, you will have no problem adding the track--it's curved and there's probably a simultaneous clamping routine that goes along with installation (Bob or Jerry can add info on this operation I'm sure). There's a SS bolt between every deck to hull fastener. t

I have a 1983 17 (wood toe rail model) without the optional genoa tracks. What would be the best way to add them? Would I have to bolt the tracks through the toe rail and hull/deck joint? Are there any other options?
Thanks,
Gordon

I think most of the 17's I made since '81 had 24" track on the side deck, just under the window. We used 7/8" Shafer T-track, if I remember correctly (but don't count on that).
Genoe gear, which included a 6' track on the toe rail, was an option.

Tom: Interesting question. I had my M15 sheet blocks on the combing as you know, and it worked pretty well. Although my M17 with the toe rail blocks seems to point pretty well--Ask Larry Yake. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails.

Has anyone located working jib sheet blocks up on the combing just in front of the winches on an M17? I think you could trim in a bit more and maybe point a bit higher from that location rather from the toe rail.
I know you could achieve the same thing with a barber hauler, but that's not the question I'm asking.
Thanks. tom
