You will find that finishing the boat takes longer than doing the woodwork. I've done a lot of carpentry. Unfortunately, I'm a framer at heart, so the finish work is a trial! I built my first boat last fall, Michalak's Piragua. Lots of fun and learned a lot. I intend to convert it to a sailing canoe, when the endless to do list is at last vanquished. I'm sort of on a quest for the ultimate cartoppable sail/row or paddle boat. I saw the MAIB article as well. I must say, the original is prettier. Did you ever rig yours for sailing? There was also an article in a recent MAIB about a trimaran conversion of a Bolger Windsprint, a 100 lb, 16' lug rigged double ender with 113 sf of sail (gives new meaning to the reef early, reef often mantra, eh?) It's very tempting to build, what with a family of four, lots of water nearby for daysails, and with all that canvas it ought to be fast! I could build amas for it and install tramps over the akas, creating a huge sprawling platform that still wouldn't weigh more than 250 lbs. Oh well, we shall see. Steve
