Henry, The two sails that get the most mileage on my 17 are a 155 and a approx. 138/5 tall -(very heavy) VERY HEAVY ( the sail is a jib from a Knarr class ) someone once said it is 'corrugated sheet metal' - Between the two mentioned AND a storm jib - you should be able to cover many conditions - by reefing - I think you would be more than happy and not be underpowered - the boat is pretty stiff. I rarely use my 110. I dislike going slow and sail 'if I am there' - we do not get 'blown out'. In the last 6 years we planned on reefing the main once - waited 20 minutes and went with full main and 110 and could have used 138/5 - we really dislike going slowly - are ALWAYS comfortable and do not believe we are stressing the boat - they are pretty much brick ___houses - built to sail comfortably in a 'stiff breeze'. I believe Jerry M once called them - 'fiberglass icebreakers' or similar in the original brochure. Masthead rigs can often carry a full genoa with a reefed main quite comfortably into 'high' wind ranges. 'Cruising does NOT mean - SLOW' - time in transit is a factor regarding provisions - try squeezing water out of a ____ when you have no breeze and small sails! My opinion - your mileage may vary - wear eye protection and a PFD at all times! Take Care,Have Fun,Go Sailing! GHenryO my sailmaker of choice - Ullman Newport Beach - ask for Keith or Bruce. The others are good too - 'Made in USA' is on my sails. keepin it 'local' - check prices - you may be surprised! In a message dated 2/25/2014 10:26:45 A.M. Other combinations? I like to sail in heavy air but often end up in very light stuff. In other words I need sails for all conditions, mostly on inland lakes with an occasional foray to Lake Michigan or Lake Superior. I can't afford to buy any right now but would like to know what to save up for. What size storm jib? I have a tanbark sail from a smaller boat that I think might work. It is 14'3" x 13'10" x 6'11", about 47 sq ft. I also have two real storm sails from Chiquita. One is tanbark, 14' x 11'6" x 6'2", about 36 sq ft. The other is white, 12' x 9' x 6', about 26 sq ft. Which would be most appropriate for a M17? -- Henry https://picasaweb.google.com/heinzir
