Actually, the biggest advantage is the low power requirement; i.e., low battery drain. I have 8 red, 8 green, and 8 white LED's that will be arranged to cover the 10, 10, and 12 point spreads required. The red and green together draw about 0.13 amps with the ballast resistor required. The brightness is impressive and brighter than most of the running lights I've see. I'v looked at the obscenely expensive LED running lights available and can't understand why they cost something like $139, unless the seller just thinks that's what the market will bear. The actual super bright LED's are less than $2 each. --Gary Hyde N24 'Sailabration' M15 #235 'Vanilla' On Dec 06, 2004, at 9:14 AM, MC Carpenter wrote:
You might be getting yourself set for a citation by the Coast Guard. To be correct you must ONLY use Coast Guard approved Lights on all navigation. I have only seen one LED set that is CG approved because of the brightness and directional problem associated with multi-LED or sometimes know as (arrays), cluster mounting. And it was very pricey. Its only real advantage was long life.

Rick: I'm working on LED navigation lights that will mount on the hull just under the deck joint. The steaming light is on the mast. --Gary Hyde N24 'Sailabration' M15 #235 'Vanilla'

On another subject, but same website, what do you guys think of the navigational lights in the hull? The wiring would be easy. The bow seems higher than the M15. I haven't seen this type of light in all the usual places that I've looked. I wonder where they put the steaming light? I'm looking for a way to have lights without going up the mast. Has anyone used the cabin sides for nav lights?
