George: so you are thinking of installing a traveler on your M15 that is on the cockpit seats, at the companionway from seatback/combing to seatback combing? or just on the cockpit floor at the companionway? -- dave Scobie --- On Mon, 12/24/12, George R. Iemmolo <griemmolo2@gmail.com> wrote:
Dave My intention to place the track in the same place the mainsheet is presently located on the deck outside the companionway hatch. This should keep the Main sheet out of the way using either the present mainsheet system or going to a 4 part system all will be out of the way of crew.
Thanks for the insights in crew location. Coming from a larger boat this helps. I did sail a WWP15 for a year and returned to a larger boat but think I am ready to go small at this stage:-)

George:
one thing to keep in mind -
if you move the main sheet aft (ie, to a cockpit floor track) you will be adjusting the sail behind where you should be sitting in addition to having to figure out how to hold onto the tiller with the mainsheet in your way.
on the M15 a person single handing should be sitting within a foot of, if not at, the cabin/cockpit bulkhead.
if two people are sailing they should be sitting shoulder to shoulder forward in the cockpit (if the wind is up); or one on the leeward side, and the other on the upwind side at the cockpit/cabin bulkhead.
with the above sitting arrangement in mind the stock setup for the mainsheet, at the companionway, is the best location.
sitting aft on the M15, which in my opinion a traveler on the cockpit floor would encourage, is not the place you should be sitting. the boat will squat on her transom and the boat's sailing performance will be very poor.

I have purchased an M15 I was looking at modifications
to
improve Sailing. Coming from larger boats (last one Pearson 23 CB) I am accustomed to using a Traveler System. Looking thru the various projects on the Montgomery site I came across your contribution on the M17 system you developed.
I have a couple of questions that you might be able to answer for me.
1. Should I continue to use the Main Sheet set up on the M15 (yoke at stern) or go full bore and convert to a 4 part mid boom Main Sheet directly to the new traveler?
2. I have searched the Ronstan web site for the parts you have listed but they do not come up. I suspect that there has been a change in the numbering system since you published the information. Do you have any recommendations as to how I can find the parts you recommend since there was no physical description of the parts?
3. I did a quick total on the costs of parts that I think might be right and they are approx $300 less line in today's boat $. Of course I have not visited a marine consignment shop to see what I can get to help keep the $ down. I see that the Harkin Small Boat Windward Sheeting Car is $319 I believe all I would have to add is Track @ about $80. So @ $400 do you think it worth the extra $100 for the Windward system?
