Technically the easiest method would be to take it to a local boatyard and break out the checkbook. :-) I have removed ablative bottom paint off of a ranger 23 using a random orbital sander, good respirator and a paint suit with hood. It really is a messy job. I looked at some of the chemical peel methods and watched the progress of a guy trying to use this method on his boat and decided that it wasn't really any easier then sanding since he had to do quite a bit of that anyway. On the montgomery boats with the lapstrake I imagine makes removal even more difficult. There are places that will soda blast, (like sandblasting only using baking soda) which seems to work well, the soda is a lot easier on the fiberglass then sandblasting would be. This to me seems like an easier method then sanding and is probably the route I will take when it comes time to do the bottom of my monty followed by an epoxy barrier coat. --Chad On Apr 29, 2009, at 10:40 AM, Arnold Sharpe wrote:
Ditto to this question! I want to take the ablative bottom paint off "Little Breeze" and replace it with hard ...what is the easiest method? Arnold On Apr 29, 2009, at 5:48 AM, JDavies104@aol.com wrote:
John,
I also have ablative bottom paint on my boat put on by the previous owner who kept her in salt water. How are you removing the paint on your boat? I'd be interested in your experience, since removing the bottom paint is on my to-do list (though not at the top of the list). My boat is now dry-sailed, so I don't need the anti-fouling protection.
Good luck,
