I believe the backstay is 1/8 inch wire. All the wire on my boat is 1/8 inch diameter and was made up by Montgomery 'Rigging' (Jerry M)
I once asked Mr Montgomery when he built new wire rigging for my boat if I should increase the forestay diameter to 5/32? The response was - 'only if you want it to weigh more - the wire is capable of supporting the weight of the complete boat' - he has a good point - (usually does).
