Bill,
Erie insures my Seawrd 23 for about $150.00 per year. Liability is automatically picked up by my Erie Homeowners Policy. My Montgomery 15 is only covered by the $1,500.00 limit available for no additional cost under the homeowners. The liability coverage under the Homeowners Policy would apply to both boats. The first couple of years I had Storm Petrel, I used a separate broker recommended by Erie, who handles my auto and homeowners. Erie doesn't do boats. The cost was only about $60/year. I wondered if it was worth their time to bill me and collect the check.
The next year, I went without insurance. They apparently decided it wasn't worth it and didn't bill me - I didn't even notice.
Last year, I paid $115 to BoatUS, $101 plus $14 for a membership. I haven't heard from them this year. Will they bill me, or do I have to apply again?
One gripe: on the app I told them I keep the boat in the Great Lakes, but sail for a week on the Chesapeake. The declarations came back reading that ". . . the insured yacht shall be confined to the waters indicated below:" and defined the Great Lakes. I wrote back and explained about the Chesapeake, but they didn't reply. The insurer was The Continental Casualty Company, a CNA company.

I added a boat rider to our home owner's insurance through USAA. Cost: $50
a year.

Can we start a bit of a thread on this subject? I use Allied, and believe me when I say that at least for me, they're broken. To start the discussion, is there any good reason to carry anything more than liability on these boats? Although the buying and selling price of our boats is nothing to sneeze at, they're not $100k boats.
Any recommendations on carriers? Long distance vs a local agent? Any ideas
are appreciated... t _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats
