A difference of 2-15 miles?! Uhhh, no thanks. I need more predictability than that. At the expense of those motors you’d think there was a more reliable range when you really need it. What if there was an emergency or ann unpredicted weather change and you’re at the 2 mile range? I’ll stick to my Honda 2 at a fraction of the price. www.rustyknorr.weebly.com

I use the Torqeedo travel 1103 (3hp) and love it. I carry the battery home for a recharge each time I use it. (No-one will steal my motor) Range varies GREATLY when run at higher speeds. It could vary from 2 miles to 15 miles. It pushes the 15 easily to 5mph. A backup battery would be great but I can't justify the expense. I normally only use a motor for getting off the dock and out of the harbor so never had a range issue. I particularly like the speedometer on the throttle and the GPS which constantly updates the range left. Did I mentioned that it's quiet?....😉

Myself, I've been holding out for the right electric outboard. Theoretically I could get 4 hours (if you believe the brochure), and a spare battery down below
Too spendy for me to try it yet though...

Seeing this thread on fuel can storage makes me think of one of those winter projects I haven't gotten to- an insert for the aft end of the cockpit of my M15. Its an area that really doesn't get any use, other than to hold one feet when you stretch out to enjoy the stars- the insert would turn it into shaded storage for a gas can or two, a tray for loose stuff in the cockpit, maybe drink holders, maybe a handy spot for the legally-required throw cushion that would also double as foot rest when lying down. I've put a rough sketch of the concept below; curious if anyone else has worked up something like this. I've got an alternate version in mind that is a drop in battery holder/trolling motor mount only for use on those mornings when the lake is glass and the fish are calling.

I'm catching up to this thread a little late and haven't followed each twist. I run our new Honda 2.3 (and the Honda 2 before it) at very low throttle settings most of the time. On flat water I typically set the throttle just above what it takes for the centrifugal clutch to fully engage and that pushes our Montgomery 15 along at about 3.8 miles per hour. At those throttle settings we typically get between 2 and 2.5 hours on a tank, which I believe is around a liter. For fuel on long trips, we use an external tank with a rubber fuel line and a bulb pump rigged to connect to a modified spare fuel cap on the motor. It takes about 30 pumps of the bulb to fill the tank when empty. If there is not much going on, we normally run the tank down until the motor starts to falter and then pump the tank full. We've done numerous week long trips and this approach has always worked well for us. Honda 2/2.3 at about 1/2 throttle (more than enough for a M15, Sage 15, SageCat, and Sage 17), burn about a little under a liter and hour (aka one tank of fuel). My practice is to refill the tank every 45-50 minutes so the motor will restart on a single pull (if you run dry multiple pulls needed to get fuel into carb).
I recommend using a 'No-Spill' brand gas can. For day sailing I had a 1-gallon that was easy to lift and fill motor. For cruising had an additional 2.5gallon can. Would transfer fuel from 2.5 to 1 gallon can for easy filling the motor.
Info on 'No-Spill' - https://nospill.com/
The 3.5 gallons in cans and a full motor tank gives 15+ hours of range.
