I re-read my post. And....I made it sound as if we did the long route, which we did not. We did the "medium" length course which was a direct line between Long Beach and San Diego one time.....and Newport Beach and San Diego the other... eliminating the Mexican waters portion. I think it is correct now that if you land on Mexican soil you need your passport....however if you transition Mexican waters, having never touched land, and then 're-enter US waters and then disembark on land.....you do not need the passport. And yes, as stated by Steven, you need them to enter Canada as well. Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE Smartphone
