I have a Hummingbird Piranha 1 fish finder that runs on AA batteries. Works great and I'm amazed at how long the batteries last. The transducer suction cup sticks to the transom right under the rudder. I've even used it on my M-7'11" to explore the lake bottom as I sail. I have one of the portable models, and it works great if you can turn the tiller loose and reach over the side. It beats a sounding lead, and is a good backup in case your electricals go wacky.

Speedtech makes a great portable depth sounder. It is a self contained unit with its own battery. There are two models. One you hold over the side and take a reading; the other can be mounted. I have had the former for years and it works great.
