earl: welcome! please share pictures and details on your project. it is good to hear about Mboats being 'saved' and 'loved'. it is my hope your stuck centerboard challenge is just rust on the board. you state 'six slash through the bottom of the hull...' was the damage on the skeg keel or the upper hull? i own M17 #375 ... so our two boats may have 'met' when in jerry's shop. did some Internet searching and found a 12-year-old 'for sale' listing for your boat -

I reluctantly decided to sell my M-17 1983,#373. My wife says get a = bigger boat or sail alone.
the boat is in very good condition:
a.. epoxy bottom painted 7/97 b.. new CDI fx2 furler 7/98 c.. all sails cleaned and resin impregnated 6/98 d.. teak has been sanded and oiled. Hull and deck cleaned and waxed. e.. Evinrude 4hp two stroke. f.. New VHF g.. Danforth and Bruce anchors with chain and 200' rode. h.. whisker for 150 genoa on furler. i.. Sunband and new mailsail cover. j.. trailer being sand blasted,painted and new wiring.
