I have one group 24 gel cell battery. It's in about it's 4th or 5th season and it's worked out well for me. Rumor has it they can be damaged if not charged correctly, so I also installed a built in, 3 stage charger. No problems to date. I've run it down pretty far, and it always comes back to hold a charge, and doesn't discharge much over the winter. Both pluses. Howard On Apr 24, 2009, at 2:10 PM, Michael wrote:
I've had both on the various boats that I have had. My last boat before the M-17 was a Hunter 31. Both batteries, wet cell, were located in the aft main berth. I have had them charging while I was sleeping being tied up at the dock with no ill affects. He may be thinking about when you put a battery on a charger and take off the caps as in the method to charge a car battery and the sulfur fumes that come out as being caustic. On my current M-17 #652, I have a single gell cell. I had Bob put a gel cell in because I had done some reasearch and am convinced that the gell cell is more of a maintenance free battery than the wet cell.
