Norm, It's all in the video that Andre referred to. In case you couldn't or didn't view it, here's a quick description. Suppose you want to reef and your reefing gear is on the starboard side. Begin by sailing close hauled on the port tack. Tack over to starboard, but do not release the jib. Leave it back winded. Keep the heading as you would if sailing close hauled on starboard tack. Put the tiller down, to leeward, and the boat will try to come into the wind but can't because of the back winded jib. The mainsail will be somewhat protected by the jib and won't slat too much. The boat will be stable and level while making a knot or so to leeward. You're now hove to and can reef, or whatever. As the video showed, you can use the technique in benign conditions. I used it once to sit out quick shower in the comfort of the dry cabin. One of the others on our cruise caught up and thought I had fallen overboard! Bill, can you describe how to heave to in an M15? I'm still new to handling my M15 and have not had the nerve to purposely heave to. I may have done it however and not known it. I would rather plan and know how to do the maneuver. Norm M15 #172 Ventura, CA _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats
