M_Boats: Rudder Assembly Cheeks

After adding a new rudder blade, refinishing the tiller and adding even more varnish to the new blade, the rudder assembly still look less than wonderful because the aluminum cheeks paint (flat black) is chipped off in places. Have any of you re-painted this? I have heard that certain paints can cause problems with aluminum, so am asking for paints and procedure tips.
