I think your design is very efficient. You are not using up cockpit space, and the fuel is right where you will need it. Use a funnel and you should be good! Another idea is to use one of those rubber bulbs that slowly pumps gas into the engine. That way, you wouldn't need to move the can or spill while you are pitching around? Just a thought.
