the M15 really 'hauls the mail' in wind between 8-12 kts with full main and 110 jib. with two people on-boat you can really go fast with correct use of weight placement (ie, movable ballast). the M15 isn't slow in light winds. her light weight means you can out-sail many larger boats because she has a good amount of sq. ft. in her sail plan. i made it a habit of 'out sailing' any boat up to 10'-15' longer in light air. above 12ish knots you want to reef the main. above 18ish knots a second reef. around 20ish knots a smaller jib is in order. she is a three-stay rig and you must have a main and jib set to sail well. she doesn't go to weather at all well with just the jib or just the main ... you need both. you also need to keep tension on the main sheet as this keeps the jib shape correct. this is why you need to reef. if you release the main sheet tension you 'bag' the jib's shape (along the luff) and can heal more ... a LOT more. keep the main sheet tension (ie, this is your rear-stay) and 'luff up' a bit and/or only let the main out enough to back wind the main's luff. in a seaway the M15 is dry and comfortable (i've only gotten wet on an M-boat when motoring into a sea). you can store an amazing amount of stuff on an M15 ... actually too much and overweight the boat. the cabin is good for sleeping - the v-berth is more comforatable and larger than the M17's. is you set on the porta-potti you _almost_ have sitting headroom. think of the M15's cabin as a fiberglass tent for sleeping and storage and you have the correct attitude about how to cruise on the boat. i cruised for up to two weeks on my M15. she is seaworthy and a boat that inspires confidence. she is also a 'looker' that means everyone walking/sailing by will ask about the boat and want to talk. please check out my old M15's www-site - http://www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.us --- On Wed, 3/2/11, Karen and Smiley <magoo252@comcast.net> wrote: Looking to get back into sailing, ironically I just unloaded 4 years ago to family a Precision 21 which I bought in 2001 and restored and the story was published early in SCA. I am an experienced sailor having sailed and owned a Prindle 16, Laser 28 and too many windsurfers as well my old P21. I think I am going to buy a new Monty 15 cause you can't find a used one anywhere here out East. Anybody want to sell one to me. Anyway I like sailing with my wife and I like the ease of storage and trailer ability. Can anybody share with me your heavy wind and seas sailing experiences as my port of sailing will be the Chesapeake Bay. Thanks Smiley magoo252@comcast.net
