A BIG pain to be sure. I agree it might make a difference to performance to some degree but I'd have to guess that a great deal more than a bolt rope in the main is what got you across the finish line fast. There aren't enough organized races where I sail to worry too much about a speeding ticket however, I have noticed I sail circles around P19's in a fresh 10 to 15knts and I like that. But I'm wondering if slugs would compromise that enough to be noticeable and if over the length of a single tack (let alone an afternoon of sailing) other more important points will come in to play to have me in the lead. I think I'm more interested in the convenience trade of slugs. And a bit of added safety along those lines for that matter. Just getting off the dock with a bit more grace and dexterity would also be huge when trying to save face amongst the stink-potters who all too frequently sneer down their noses at my daughter and I as they depart for distant fishing grounds at a rampant pace in their Grady White's and triple threat outboards. ----- Original Message ---- From: Tom Smith <openboatt@gmail.com> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 3:38:15 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Slugs vs Bolt Rope Bolt rope's a pain, and I contemplated changing when I had new sails sewn for our M15. As it happened, we traveled down to Oakland and I had the good fortune to race with Jerry M in the Cruiser Challenge in 2000. He was very partial to bolt rope, so that's the route I took and the new sails were waiting at his place when we arrived. The proof for me was in the pudding because we won our class, and by time beat all but the biggest boats of the boats around the course. We've got bolt rope on our M17 now and I'll stick with that next rev too... two cents. t On 2/15/07, Sailfan1 <sailfan1@yahoo.com> wrote:
Curious if anyone is aware of any opinions about performance compromise, if any, by changing the luff of the mainsail from a bolt rope to slugs? Has anyone done it and were they happier?
