Thanks for your comments Jerry. I understand the one off nature of this particular discussion. It may well develop into a production model some time. You said: *"comfort in the cockpit is very important, at least to me."* and we certainly agree. We have many friends with much larger boats, and we think a good number of their cockpits suck! The same folks love the feel of our M17 cockpit. Regards, Bill On Wed, Jan 2, 2013 at 4:05 PM, jerry montgomery <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org>wrote:
Bill- most of your comments I really won't be involved in (let the builder do as he wants) but will offer my suggestions.
1. Probably I'll draw in a M or Sage locker on both sides, and the same for the lazarette locker. The builder can do as he pleases. Each one will add several days to build, and finish.
2. I won't draw in a bow locker because I really don't like the weight of an anchor and chain up that high. On my own boats I've always kept that stuff in a cockpit locker, where the weight is as low as possible and becomes ballast.instead of anti-ballast. On the M-23 I put in a chainlocker in the bottom of the stem, and a roller at the stemhead that was sized to hold a 20 lb CQR, which is my anchor of choice. It had a hawspipe for the chain to go down. I've heard it worked well; maybe Sean can pipe in. But--- the M-23 is a much heavier boat.
3. Haven't decided on the rig yet because I haven't decided on the interior, but probably will use an inboard, cabin-top track for the lapper on down, then a long track on the rail for genoas and spinnakers, and maybe for long heavy-air reaches with small jibs when reaching or running. That setup was optional on the M-17 and std on the Sage, and the way I rig my own boats. I'd like to use a 7/8 rig on the 21, for several reasons but mostly because since the main has a larger portion of the sail area as opposed to a masthead rig, reefing the main makes a larger difference and reduces the need to change headsails. I started thinking about a 7/8 rig for the Sage 17 after studying the MORC rule, which penalizes fractional rigs more than mastheads for one reason; they're faster for they're size!
4. I'm hoping that I can put the cockpit sole high enuff to do that w/o making sitting uncomfortable, which has been a reason not to do it with previous boats. On the upcoming Sage 15 we're talking about making a small bridgedeck right at the forward end of the cockpit so an icebox and/or head can slip under the cockpit. On the S 15 there won't be a centerboard trunk blocking the center of the fwd end of the cockpit(because of a DB trunk incorporated into the fwd berth) so that might work out well. On the 21 the cabin sole will be so much wider it opens up all sorts of things, but comfort in the cockpit is very important, at least to me.

Jerry,
A few questions
1. Cockpit side lockers being open to below decks like the M17/15 and Sage 15, or closed off? Or one closed off, one open? 2. Shallow anchor locker on the fore deck? Shallow enough that the forward section of the V berth is still useful. 3. 2 sets of jib sheet tracks for genoa and working jib? 4. Depending on the keel/centerboard/daggerboard position, space for a cooler to slide under the cockpit, or be mounted as a companionway step?
Thanks,
Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 #622

They're OK, and the wider the decks are the more headbanging below.

This boat will be quite a bit smaller than the 23 but probably will have more beam. Definately the side decks will be wider!

Hi Jerry,
I am perfectly comfortable with the 8'' beam on my M23. The only real issue is the narrow port and starboard side decks next to the coach roof. These require a bit of carefully stepping ______________________________****____________________________**__
